FORTY-FIVE
We came out of the restaurant and took a left on Boylston, another left on Dalton, and then another on Belvedere, on our way to Huntington. I asked how sheâd come to work for Andrew Crain. She said she was a single mom, raising her son, working for one of Lithâs satellite tech companies, another start-up, in Silicon Beach.
âDivorced?â I said. âWidowed?â
âDivorced,â she said. âI was young. And stupid. And thought I was madly in love. I got pregnant. He left.â She shook her head. âThe reason I never talk about it is that it always starts to sound like a bad country song. If it hadnât produced my son, it was as if it never happened.â
âDonât they say that if you ran country songs in reverse, theyâd all have happy endings?â I said.
âIt was my first bad decision with men,â she said. âAnd that is another subject Iâd like to change, thank you.â
âDone,â I said.
She pulled her jacket tighter around her as we waited for the light to change on Huntington with the Colonnade across the street and the shops at the Prudential Center behind us.
âWant to tell me more about how you came to work for your boss?â
âHappily,â Claire Megill said.
âWas he around your company a lot, is that how you first met him out there?â
âI was working somewhere else when he hired me,â she said. âBut a headhunter called one day and asked if Iâd be interested in going to work for Andrew Crain. He was out in Southern California and took me to dinner. We talked for a long time that night. He asked how I liked my current job, which was at Apple. I said I liked it fine, but wasnât being challenged, blah, blah, blah. And told him, quite honestly, that I was barely able to support my little boy and me on what I was making. I must have come across pretty well that night, because two weeks later I was working for Lithâs tech company out there. Six months after that, I had moved to Boston and became his assistant, with more responsibility, and for more money than I ever thought Iâd make in my life.â
We passed the Colonnade.
âHow can I find out if thereâs a fox in the henhouse at Lith?â I said.
She smiled for the first time, fully. Almost happily. âDo people still use that expression?â
I smiled back at her. âOnly when the wolf is at the door,â I said.
âWell, Iâm certain I can help you with that,â she said. âI just canât have Andrew and Ethan know that I would essentially be spying on my own company. Or have Clay get wind of it, for that matter. So weâll need to be discreet.â
âOne of my many specialties,â I said.
âDo I want to know what the other specialties are?â
âWeâd need more time for me to list them all,â I said.
We were a couple blocks from her building when we heard the thunder and then saw the lightning over our heads, followed instantly by a violent rain.
